Son of Hannah Elizabeth GATHERCOLE (born Lakenheath 1894) who appears to have married John R CRANE (Mildenhall Q4-1926 4A:2133)

Husband of Evelyn Gladys STEBBEDS of Mildenhall, in Q4-1939 (Newmarket 4A:4418).

In the 1939 register his mother [22-11-1895] was at 37 Mill Road, Lakenheath with his stepfather John Robert CRANE [9-8-1896] a farm labourer. There is one closed record.

His Japanese PoW card gives him as a farm labourer, his wife Evelyn as at 24 Junction Road, Mildenhall, and his place of birth as Battersea. His will gives him as of Lakenheath and his wife had re married, to Edward John Ernest FINNIS.


Jack is believed to be the cousin of Wilfred GATHERCOLE:- see here





Jack was captured by the Japanese on 15th February 1942, at the surrender of Singapore, and died on the Thailand-Burma railway.

Jack is buried in Chungkai War Cemetery, Thailand ref..9:F:12.
